Abstract
The word Chandas is to be represented vital
part in both Vedic and Classical Sanskrit Literature. From the time of
uncertain history, in Indian tradition, it is believed that knowledge has been
passed down by memorizing the mantras from generation to generation orally.
Pupils pursued their preceptors in the same thread. Obviously, something in
lyrical form is easier of memorizing. For this sole reason, most of Sanskrit
scriptures are written in verse form. It is hardly any mantra, found in the
Vedas, is bereft of Chandas. Study of metrics is not confined to Vedic
Literature. Most of our Classical Sanskrit composers also used the chandas as
the spirit of the work. Chandas is a vidyā so that we can say, it is the
science of metre. From our childhood we knowingly or unknowingly are drawn
towards the soothing aura of rhythmic composition being passionate to the
rhythm unconsciously. Chandas
being the science of rhythm became a very important part in ancient education
system as well. Chandas, one of the most adorable subjects, is to
recognize in this survey.
